The alarm clock was set to go off at 4:30AM this morning, but I never heard it. I was already awake, lying there in my bed thinking of how much fun we were going to have the next 10 days! We made to Dallas - Fort Worth Airport without incident and had a couple hours to kill so we ate breakfast at Chili's where Brad set a nice precedent and picked up the tab. Actually, one could argue that his Aunt Jenny picked up the tab since he used a couple cards she had given him at Christmas. Either way, I was appreciative!

Maui Quotes
Most of these are of the "You had to be there" variety; but I wanted to post this list of quotes Aubs emailed to me so we wouldn't forget them...
Dad: Hey where'd mom go? (When Mom bent down to her suitcase at the airport table where we were having a drink)
Mom: Ask those kids if they know where one is... (After we landed in Maui and were looking for a liquor store)
Dad: This menu is really California. What's Hummus dip?
Mom: Come outside the sun is hot.
Brad: (about pool ID bracelets) We're in room 4.... Where is it?
Between 2 and... Damn it. Well try again tomorrow
Random drunk guy on Lahania Street: I like people in dresses and both of them are good
Mom: Get my upper neck
Dad: Mom has regions of neck

Our Last Day
Our last day seemed to last forever becasue we started it at 3:30 in the morning. We drove for about an hour and a half and made it to the top of Haleakala in time to see the sunrise.
It was really interesting as the sun got higher in the sky. You could see more and more...
We layered up as best we could; it was in the 40's that high up.
Afterwards we went to the Winery. They had a free tour and some tasting.
The trees on the Winery property were spectacular.
Our plane didn't leave until 7:30 PM so we had time to drive back over to Lahanai. Aubrie and I snapped pictures from either side of the car on the way over. I was on the ocean side.
She was on the moutnain side.
The trip was coming to an end.
We said good-bye to Cheese Burger in Paradise on the way back to the rental car.
It was definitely a great trip!

Paia
After the Road to Hana, we spent the next day just hanging out in Paia and at the beach. We ate breakfast here once at Cafe` Mambo, and also bought a picnic lunch for the Road to Hana trip.
This place is owned by the guys from KISS. It's called Rock and Brews. Pretty good eats..
They say that Fist Market restaurant is about as good as Mama's Fish House.
All kinds of cool little shops in Paia.
I know I've used the word alot in this Blog, but Paia really is a "Hippy" town.
This is a public beach in Paia called Baldwin Park Beach. It was great! After having lunch at the Flatbread Pizza Company, we loaded up some drinks and hung out here for the afternoon. We knew we had to get to bed at a reasonable hour because we needed to get up at 3:30 AM so we could see the sunrise at the top of the Volcanoe.

Road to Hana!
We all laughed pretty hard when we saw this picture. Two reasons: first, the look on Aubrie's face; second, we had been debating earlier in the car how/where pineapples grew.
First stop was the Twin Falls.
There was a little bamboo forest on the path to the Twin Falls.
"We are free!"
Digging your hat Brad!
The stop for Twin Falls had a little Farmstand that sold fresh fruit.
The Road to Hana has so many interesting stops along the way!
Every where you look there's something beautiful to see.
See? Look at these two, just beautiful!
OK, seriously; look at how gorgeous that is!
Stopping at the side of the road just to gaze for a while...
Here is a small grove of rainbow eucalyptus trees. The guy who rappelled with us who authored a travel book said the bark shifts colors over night. They look different each day.
It felt other-worldly standing next to them.
These trees are as smooth as a baby's bottom.
We turned off the main road to explore a little side-road and discovered this little bay.
It turned out to be one of the best picture-spots on the Road to Hana.
This was at Cocunut Glen's; some wild and crazy hippy dude who opened an ice-cream shop on the Road to Hana. His bio was posted in the shop. Pretty wild...
"Coconut" was our "Safe Word" on the Road to Hana. If somebody said "Coconut", everyone had to be quite and Dad had to slow down while driving.
He sold some great-tasting ice-cream!
There's Aubrie in her signature pose down by a cool waterfall we found along the way.
We explored the lava tubes.
It was sort of spooky going into them...
Here's Aubrie explaining to Brad the origin of the tubes...
A welcome sight after being down in the tubes for 30 minutes.
Believe it or not this garden is a maze. See Aubrie in the middle of the pic trying to find her way? I raced ahead to catch up with Katie. 2 minutes later is started to absolutely pour rain. Brad and Aubrie, still in the maze, paid the price and got soaked.
OK, you tell me; am I seeing things or not? Center of the pic: doesn't that look like the profile of a guy where the waves are crashing?
This is a scene on the "other side" of the Road to Hana; after you get through the frightening part where the roads are skinny and on the cliffs. There was a young couple walking down to the beach who ruined my otherwise great "nature shot". See them in the lower left? Oh well, pictures with people in them are better anyway I guess...
This is cool! See the archway out there in the distance?
It's a little easier to see in this picture; right above Brad's head and off in the distance.
We parked the car on the way back and I got out the tripod for this one. Yes, I HDR'd it... You can see 3 islands in this pic. Maui, where I'm standing, (and also the area to the right - that's a part of Maui too). Lanai is straight ahead, under where the sun is setting (maybe just a little to the right). And Kahoolawe is the larger piece of land on the left. That little guy in front of Kahoolawe is Molokini where there is some great snorkeling to do.

Helicopter Ride
Here's the helicopter we rode in.
Getting ready for take-off!
The day was a bit cloudy, but the views were still spectacular!
This picture would have been the best of the trip if the day had been as clear as the day before when we were ziplining.
You could see the coral in the shallow waters!
Beautiful waters!
Saw a big cruise show parked near the shore.
Safe on the ground again!
After the helicopter ride we moved into our room at Mama's Fish House. It was great, had a little kitchen and a couple of bedrooms.
All the comforts of home really. That couch was a pull-out bed.
The best part was the porch.
Here's what the restaurant looks like. The first time we were here Katie and I got a seat right in the front window area. It was our 25th Anniversary!
This canoe is out in front of the restaurant. Right above Katie's head is the place we rented for 3 nights.
You think he made it all the way to the top?
You think she did?
Pretty sweet place to be for a few days!
This scene is out front and can be seen on the main road as you leave Paia on the Road to Hana. So if you ever drive the road to Hana, be sure to stop when you see this boat and make dinner reservations!
